Privacy Policy

The Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) respects your privacy. We have built this website to collect as little information about you as possible. You can read the entire guide without giving us any personal information, creating an account, or accepting tracking cookies.

What we collect

We do not collect personal information that identifies you. This website has no sign-up, no login, and no contact forms that send your details to us. We do not use tracking or advertising cookies, and we do not build profiles of visitors.

The only information we gather is anonymous, aggregated usage data through our analytics tool, described below.

Analytics

We use Plausible Analytics to understand how the guide is used — for example, which pages are read most often — so we can improve it. Plausible is a privacy-focused analytics tool designed to comply with privacy laws including the GDPR.

Plausible:

  • Does not use cookies and does not store anything on your device for analytics
  • Does not collect personal data or information that identifies you
  • Does not track you across websites or over time
  • Reports only aggregated statistics, never data about an individual visitor

As well as page visits, we record anonymous interaction events that help us improve the guide — for example, which sections are read, which resources and downloads are used, and the search terms entered (recorded anonymously, never linked to you). These events contain no personal information.

Plausible processes this anonymous data on servers located in the European Union. ALGA does not sell, rent, or share this data with third parties for marketing.

You can read more about how Plausible protects privacy in the Plausible data policy.

Information stored on your device

If you switch between light and dark mode, we save that preference in your browser's local storage so the site remembers your choice on your next visit. This information stays on your device, is not personal information, and is never sent to us or to anyone else. You can clear it at any time by clearing your browser's site data.

Server logs

Like most websites, the service that hosts this site may automatically record standard technical information when a page is requested, such as the IP address making the request, the browser type, and the time of the request. These logs are used to keep the site secure and running reliably. We do not use them to identify individual visitors, and we do not combine them with our analytics.

Links to other websites

This guide links to other websites, such as resources from government agencies and other organisations. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those sites. We encourage you to read the privacy policy of any website you visit.

Your privacy rights

ALGA handles personal information in line with the Australian Privacy Principles under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).

Because this website does not collect personal information about you, there is generally nothing for us to give you access to or correct. If you have contacted ALGA by other means and want to access or correct personal information ALGA holds about you, or if you have a privacy concern, you can contact us using the details below.

Changes to this policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time, for example if we change the tools we use. When we do, we will update the date below. We encourage you to review this page occasionally to stay informed.
